DRAGON AGE INQUISITION CHARACTER KIT #3
To Vivienne, there are no impractical clothes, only impractical people. Her magnificent attire is a sign of her station, the jewel of the high court of Orlais where wealth, power, and beauty are inextricably linked.
A thousand arrows would pierce her breast before Vivienne would don beaten steel for so base an urge as protection. If one must wear armor, then have it flatter the form. Hide it beneath fine fabrics more becoming of one’s status, for steel alone will not protect you from the barbed tongues of Orlais.
To dress for comfort or purpose is a scandal—fashion and splendor are all that matter to Vivienne. Shower yourself in gold, let only the finest silks grace your skin, and wear a king’s ransom in pearls and silver upon your feet. Leave the stained tunics and rough cloaks to the commoners and their mud farms–a proper Orlesian climbs mountains in her evening gown, standing taller at the summit in her formidable high-heeled shoes.

Yessss. I’ve been waiting for this one.
Friendly reminder that no one is making you play Assassin’s Creed if you’re upset by the “killing female characters off solely for male development” stigma.
friendly reminder that its okay to criticize and…
no see the huge problem is that everyone is still taking the in-game explanations for the female characters suddenly disappearing or just flat out dying as if they actually did happen in real life
and yeah a lot of people die I get that it’s literally called Assassin’s Creed of course people are going to die???? but that’s not even the point
if you want to have a debate with me about this you’re going to have to stop looking at this from the perspective of characters being real and start looking at it from my perspective of this topic; Ubisoft using their characters as tools and nothing else
and I will swear while writing this out because it doesn’t mean my point is any less valid it just means I’m pissed off about this subject so
"If that was the case, then Altair wasn’t important enough to have his second game on a main console either, right?"
I’m just going to get this out of way right now: yeah he wasn’t you got it that’s literally it
Ubisoft had no reason to put Altair’s other games on the psp and before you even ask yes I did play Bloodlines and am well aware of Maria being in it and her interactions and let me tell you they are very few
they gave Ezio 3 games in the main series on the big consoles because everyone loved him and he became the poster boy for Assassin’s Creed and shoved the other assassins in the closet and gave them mini games or little cameos so yeah they didn’t think Altair was important enough for a second console game even though his story was interesting as fuck because they didn’t care
"The PS Vita was still almost brand new to the market with Aveline’s game was released. Ubisoft even released with sony a limited edition PS Vita with the game on the same exact date AC3 came out, and was on sale right on time for Black Friday as well. "
key words: at the same exact time as AC3
do you really not see the problem with this??? it was a marketing tactic to release her game at the same time as AC3 and do you know why???
they didn’t think Aveline would be noticed and important enough to gamers on her own and you can argue with that all you want but you know it’s true
Altair, Ezio, Connor, Edward, they all had their own console games released on their own dates and there was this huge lead-up to each one but I barely saw anything about Liberation until it was actually released and that’s only because it was thrown in there with some AC3 stuff
Aveline’s story is fucking incredible I read up about it and watched some of it and I loved it it was interesting and had cool mechanics and she was a tough badass female assassin which is rare to see in these games lbr
she should have gotten her own release date on a major name console because of it but she didn’t and all the male protags did even though their stories were boring and poorly thought out after Brotherhood (AC3 is my favorite game and Connor is my favorite character but I’m totally willing to admit that the story fucking sucked and Connor was boring as fuck in the game, but the thing is I love it so much because of my own interpretation of it and what I could read more on from the wiki and the encyclopedias. which is definitely not how it’s supposed to be)
"One of the biggest key things that I feel many parts of the fandom may forget is that the reason we don’t see so many things actually happen that we WANT to see is because the main feature of the game and plot is that you are playing and reliving through the memories of your ancestor.
It would not make sense for Ezio to be hovering over his sister constantly as she grew to see what sorts of other accomplishments she had done. The same could be said for many other characters we want to know about but did not see.
The main character was not present, so we could not see it because “we” were not present to see it.”
again stop looking at this from the explanation in-game because that shit was made by Ubisoft they could have decided they were closer than just a visit every 20 fucking years
he sure spent a lot of time with Leonardo and Yusuf and literally every other character in the series instead of his own family don’t you think
you don’t have to hover around someone to see them a lot I mean???? Ezio and Claudia fucking lived together they were bound to see each other much more often than they were said to have actually done
and yeah Ezio went off to do missions for the Assassin’s a lot but as much as he said he loved Claudia he seemed to avoid her for the most part except for a handful of moments where he came rushing in to save the day
speaking of which
"Claudia fought off a herd of guards in Brotherhood single handedly when they attacked the Rose in Fiore with a KNIFE. They were all dead or unconscious when Ezio arrive (we didn’t see her fight because, again, we are forever trapped in the eyes of the descendent)."
I actually went back to AC2 to count exactly how many guards Claudia took down and it was 4
that is definitely not a “herd” and not even close to how many people Ezio can apparently take down when they should have received the same training as Assassins since back then even the assassin who logged stuff knew how to fight for their own protection
if you don’t believe me:
and on the topic of Maria Thorpe:
you didn’t even bother to explain anything yourself and just copy pasted from the wiki as if that was some excuse as to why she lost everything like yeah characters and their stories matter but it was Ubisoft’s decision to make her story that way
"Again from the Wiki: She then followed Altaïr to the Assassins’ fortress in Masyaf, where they settled down and had two children together. Several years later, Maria, Altaïr and their son Darim went on a journey to assassinate the Mongol leader Genghis Khan, while her younger son Sef remained behind.
This disproves your comment on how she”never picked up a sword or defended herself ever again”.”
she never picked up a sword again in-game which is the whole point of this???? saying one thing and then showing another are two completely different things
did you SEE Maria and Darim killing Genghis Khan??? if Altair was with them to do it don’t you think we should have seen it happen??? which game was that in??? I’m honestly curious because I don’t remember it happening in any of them
"And again, when making an argument, don’t turn and point insults or such phrases as “I don’t even know what to say to you.” It only makes you appear unintelligent and immature, which I am sure and absolutely hope that is not the case."
if one sentence can turn my entire post about how badly Ubisoft treats their women characters from intelligent to immature and stupid just like that then I really don’t know what to say
because I am legit amazed I even have to try to explain this to people when it should be known already
but for your sake then I guess I’ll elaborate on this a little bit
"Fact of the matter is back then it was a big hard for women to get anywhere, let alone grow up in ranks and become highly respected in either good or bad sides."
"It was because women were seen as INFERIOR. Historically accurate portrayals again."
I’m not going to get into a huge debate on women’s rights throughout history because that’s not what we’re talking about here but I will say that if you’re totally willing to believe a game that says they’re the most historically accurate game in the entire world and then in the same sentence says there’s aliens and super advanced civilizations from the past and incredibly advanced technology and time travel and mind-control then maybe it wouldn’t be so far fetched to have a woman or two in positions of power without a man there to get it for her
and saying that it’s historically accurate that men have run literally everything in history up until like the fucking 20th century is extremely sexist and erases countless female heroes and leaders throughout history and while not exactly in the time period the games take place they did exist and were absolutely amazing
"Maria was killed because of the enemy making a move to Altair and over-throwing them. At this point in the game (within Revelations), she is older and so is he. When she dies (protecting Altair from a killing blow) , Altair has no choice but to retreat. He returns later and, with peace, is able to take control back from Abbas (whom had turned paranoid and was running Masyaf on a tight, choking leash). Altair would have gone back to remove Abbas from the Assassins regardless. It was dangerous for him to continue ruling, and he was turning into another Al Mualim. Abbas was moving the plot, not Maria’s death. "
yes but see what was the point of her dying like that
you said it yourself Altair would have gone back either way to stop Abbas
it wasn’t to push him into doing it
it didn’t even really cause any major character development besides “oh now I’m so sad and I’m going to die alone in this library”
he knew already the Apple was evil and already planned to rescue the Assassins from Abbas and already planned to seal everything away
so what was the point of her getting killed protecting him?
"Cristina, as I mentioned before, died in the bonfires but did not spur the plot of Ezio in Brotherhood. We only saw it further as a memory of his."
1. she barely got any screentime 2. her role was practically exclusive to “love interest for Ezio” 3. she was seen as the bad guy when she moved on and if you don’t believe me go around and ask a few people off tumblr what they think about her for not staying in love with him the entire time 4. she died in the bonfire and then is never mentioned again ever not by Ezio not in the games - never
Cristina wasn’t used to progress a male character’s plot, but she was killed off to just make him have a reason to angst and as a shock factor to the audience
"Mary died in the prisons because she was not treated well as both a pirate and a prisoner (accurate to the times) and through child birth without the proper treatment. Edward had previously lost Adewale as his quartermaster do to his greed to find the Observatory. Hornigold had turned Templar on him, Calico Jack had taken his ship and crew and left him stranded on an island, Vane went mad and tried to kill him. Thatch (his father figure) died in battle. There were many losses that Edward had that was making him grow doubtful of his actions.
Mary’s death was important to the plot, yes, but there was a lot more than just her death that spurred it on. Not only did she die, but Vane, Jack, Hornigold, Thatch, and many others. Mary was the straw that broke the back and left him depressed, because Edward feels guiltly.
So, yes, in Edward’s case Mary’s death did HELP cause his plot to move forward. But she didn’t die JUST for the plot. She died because it was historically accurate for her to die, and the conditions were met. “
I’m well aware of how she died and when and all the others that died too but the point here is that there were several opportunities for them to include her and one instance is even mentioned on the wiki itself
"Originally, Edward was meant to witness and participate in Mary Read and Anne Bonny’s battle against the British, ending with their imprisonment, but this idea was dropped during the early stages of development."
you can say it was due to time restrictions or whatever you want but i don’t believe that would just be it
the developers of Assassin’s Creed generally only remove bits they think would be uninteresting or unnecessary to the game and they’ve said so before
which should say enough about why they removed a scene where Mary Read would actually be kicking ass AS Mary Read and not James Kidd
Mary showed up several times after being revealed to be a woman but practically each time she did she was captured or in some kind of situation where she had to be rescued or helped
it was clever of her as a character in the game to feign being injured to get into Laurens Prin’s manor but thinking about it not from the “these characters are real” perspective but from the “this is what Ubisoft decided to do with them” one, this is actually really stupid
James Kidd was shown to have plenty of skill and would have been able to take out the guards without exposing herself like that; there were only two of them after all and it wouldn’t have been hard to use darts or something
oh but I forgot only Edward can use tactics like that not anyone else ever
and my point is that yes she did get arrested and she did give birth and she did die in the prison historically, but it’s still the matter of the fact that Ubisoft decided to show practically those parts exclusively instead of literally any other thing she did which could have very easily crossed paths with Edward somehow
"If they gave more screen time to certain characters, they would have to make more excuses for the main characters to be around them which could leave to a cluttered mess of a game that would be a bad sell out."
this part is going to come back and bite me in the ass I just know it but
>implying Assassin’s Creed isn’t already a cluttered mess filled with plot holes and issues
don’t get me wrong Assassin’s Creed is my favorite series and I love every character and almost every single game with all my heart and I’ve spent countless hours studying the lore and history and characters and learning as much as I could
hell I’m still buying the games and I enjoyed the fuck out of AC4
but just because you love something doesn’t mean there are no faults in it and Assassin’s Creed has some of the biggest - yet subtle - faults I’ve ever seen in a videogame series
you are my actual hero holy fucking shit all hail this is wonderful
